Thank you Anne and Kim. I do strive for simplicity...Not always easy. I remeber a quote once that said "Any darn fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make something simple." I just can't remember who said it...

Artist's Description

The Old Willow 2008 I saw this scene in passing one night. I came back and took a photo of it in the daytime. I prefer to draw from life when ever possible. When I do draw from one of my photos I draw in the same method in which I draw from life. I sit the pic up like it is a scene I would find looking out a window. The composition was created when I took the pic. The camera is a view finder. Drawing from a photograph is a poor way to train in comparison to drawing from life. But an experienced artist can create from either method equally. One of the things I enjoy from life drawing is the elements you contend with. You certainly draw more direct and quickly when you are freezing cold or the sun is beating down you mercilessly. If your work is too tight and careful, try going outside and drawing from life.

About Arthur Barnes

Arthur Barnes

Arthur Barnes is a artist who works in a variety of mediums including ink, watercolor, pastels and oils. He prefers to work directly from life and his favorite subjects are landscapes with an emphasis on nocturnes and scenes of the Erie Canal. Brackman was a student of Ashcan artist/ teacher Robert Henri. Since that time, Arthur has been on a consistent course of self-training in art with an emphasis on learning through experience much like the Ashcan artists. "You learn to draw. . .by drawing," his teacher often recited. Artists Statement on Nocturnes "Half of our...
