Artist's Description

I sat in a restaurant and sketched this scene in ink while looking out the window. I went to the Walsh Hotel down the street and sat at the bar nursing a beer while replaying Etta James on the jukebox over and over. It was a favorite place for me to sketch at the time. I sat at the bar and painted over the drawing in watercolor under the glow of the light above the pool table. After I finished the painting a left the pad on the bar and went to use the rest room. When I returned I noticed the bar tender had wiped off the bar and in doing so had picked up an ashtray and set it on my painting. When I lifted it off the pad I discovered the tray was wet and it left a ring of water on the paint. I quickly padded it gently with a napkin. "No worries", I thought. It was fixable. I could paint over it. But after looking at it I decide I liked it and left it alone.

Since that time, Arthur has been on a consistent course of self-training in art with an emphasis on learning through experience much like the Ashcan artists. "You learn to draw. . .by drawing," his teacher often recited. Artists Statement on Nocturnes "Half of our...
