Artist's Description
2009 I was visiting a friend of mine who lived on a corner on High Street in the Erie Canal city of Lockport. I went outside with watercolor pad in hand look for a scene to paint. I didn't get far. I walked to the corner and turned around and saw this scene, the very house I was visiting. I stood in the shadows and sketched it. I remember at one point being deep in thought and forgetting my surroundings.. I suddenly felt vulnerable and missed my old dog Roscoe who would always sit next to me protecting my back while I focused on the act of creating art.
About Arthur Barnes
Arthur Barnes is a artist who works in a variety of mediums including ink, watercolor, pastels and oils. He prefers to work directly from life and his favorite subjects are landscapes with an emphasis on nocturnes and scenes of the Erie Canal. Arthur has had little formal training but was fortunate to study a year under Juanita Greene Parks in 1982. She had studied under Reginald Marsh and Robert Brackman. Brackman was a student of Ashcan artist/ teacher Robert Henri. Since that time, Arthur has been on a consistent course of self-training in art with an emphasis on learning through experience much like the Ashcan artists.
